The three girls below were playing with the alphabet puzzle. They took out all the pieces and then took turns showing a piece ans asking whether it was a living or non-living thing. The game they were playing was initiated by them during free play time, they were taking what we are learning in class and transferring it to their play while also showing evidence of their learning. They were also practicing cooperation skills and turn taking, very nicely if I may add!
I thought that this was an important to share as it shows how students demonstrate understanding of the topics discussed in class through their play and teacher observations and anecdotes are one of the ways we assess learning. Today was Pi day at AcadeCap as part of our spirit week. Now this day may have been a source of some confusion for the kindergarten students however they did enjoy and did understand to some degree that Pi meant a number, had something to do with circles and was represented by a table like symbol (or that it was all about pies). The very best part of today is what I would like to share with you and it all started from a kindergarten student's shirt that was specially made for Pi day. On her shirt was the title Buffon's Needle and a depiction of what that was. Since we (myself included!) were so curious as to what this meant, we decided to ask one of AcadeCap's resident math experts, Mme Neena. Mme Neena told us she would come to our class and explain! Just 10 minutes later, Mme Neena arrived with a special paper marked with a few lines across the page, evenly separated, and a sewing needle. She went on to explain about Pi and about Buffon's Needle and then demonstrated. We took turns dropping the needle on the paper and seeing if it would land on or between the lines. It was a really fantastic learning opportunity and was so very interesting, all inspired by our kindergarten friend's shirt! Mme Neena was also inspired, her grade 8 math lesson went from whatever had been planned to a lesson about Buffon's Needle. Mme Neena loved sharing her knowledge with us so much that she said she'd like to come back and share more! Thank you to our kindergarten friend for coming to school in the mathiest shirt ever and inspiring this series of events!
Some pretty imaginative play was happening here! A school called l'école de coup where I was named étoile and had to go on a time out because I wasn't cutting my plasticine very well...tough teacher. There were cookies being baked at school and we had to be very careful not to burn ourselves on the purple oven rack. A collection of models being made on the side and lots of laughs!
At first glance, the drawing on the chalk board appears to be a scribble, but there is always thought to what each and every child does. That is what we always have to remember so never assume that what you see is what it is! In this particular case, the drawing is a pattern. A pattern that this sweet girl is incredibly proud of, and rightly so! The pattern, as I was told, goes like this, 'Clap, clap, stomp, stomp, clap, clap, stomp, stomp!' Just perfect.
These three students were happily finishing their math work while some of their classmates had music class. Their excitement in completing their work was delightful! Working on some place value activities and making groups of 10 was the task at hand. 'More activities to complete?' was their question was once they finished ;)
